In the Corbin Clan's Homeschool, Nikkie likes to use themes in her teaching, building on subjects on those particular themes.
This year (2011-2012), the theme is "All About Me!" This theme is divided into three smaller themes shown below.
- Who I Am - In this theme, the kids are learning about who they are and who they are not. They learned that they are living and completed a study on living things and what they have in common. They learned that they are not animals (yes, they know that technically, people are described as animals and are classified as Mammals but they also know that God created man separate and above the animal kingdom). They will soon be learning that they are not plants and will learn all about plants. They will be learning that they are human beings and will study the human body. And so forth.
- Where I Came From - In this theme, the kids will be learning about their ancestors, where they came from, and what they did. We will be learning about people from key periods of time and studying the history of the world through the lives of our ancestors.
- Where I Am Going - In this theme, the kids will explore possible futures for themselves. They will learn about different careers, different lands, and so forth.
Teaching with a theme allows everyone to be learning similar things all at the same time. And by creating their own themes, the Corbins are able to explore the things that interests them the most!
Individually, the kids are learning things on their level as shown below.
- Matthew is learning lots in math like multiplication and division, using decimal numbers, fractions, and so much more. In English, he continues to read more and more, write more and more, and so forth.
- Gabrielle is learning addition and subtraction, identifying and counting money, and so forth. She also has really taken off in her reading, reading at a third grade (borderline fourth grade) level and is learning to write stories.
- Jeremiah is learning to read, write, count to twenty, and so forth
