Typical Homeschool Day |
|
Who is homeschooled? Matthew and Gabrielle are the only two being homeschooled presently. Matthew is in first grade. Gabrielle is in 4-year-old kindergarten. Jeremiah, being 2 years old, does some pre-school work but not a lot. If he wants to participate, he does. He often wants a worksheet when Matthew and Gabrielle are doing sheets and so Nikkie creates him things that he can do. He also, thanks to the Baby Can Read program, is learning to read. What does the typical homeschool day look like for the Corbin family? Although a homeschool day can vary greatly (someone wakes up sick, other obligations divide the day, or Nikkie decides that the kids just need to do something different like spend more time focusing on a specific subject), the Corbins do have a typical homeschool day plan which is what they try to follow on a regular basis. Below is what a typical day would look like for them. Between 8:30 am and 9:00 am, school starts. If they sleep later, that’s fine. They don’t have to get started at an exact time. Sometimes, Nikkie may even get a few chores accomplished before the kids finish with their breakfast and cleaning themselves up. Nikkie spreads their lessons out throughout the day, allowing them the joy of sleeping later. As long as the daily plans are accomplished, Nikkie does not concern herself with what time they start. The kids usually have something fun to start with like activities that use blocks, fun educational games, or such. During this time, Nikkie is able to gather any last minute materials for the day. Then they have basic morning activities like reviewing the alphabet, counting, doing calendar activities, being reminded of what they’ve been learning, and so forth. From this point on, they begin to complete the lessons for the day. By lunch time, most of their work is accomplished (unless they had a late start). Lunch break includes eating, and then enjoying some television. Then, they finish any work that was not accomplished before lunch including things that require more one-on-one attention. Once the kids are finished, they can play for a while and then are expected to clean up before time for their Dad to come home. The Corbins spread their schooling out to take up most of the day, taking the long lunch break. This works great for them because it keeps the busy children busy doing something constructive rather than making messes. Maybe in the future, the typical day will look different but for now, this is what you would see in their home. When does the typical homeschool day take place? Any day they want to have it. Typically, they only have school Monday through Friday but they have also had school on Saturdays. They don’t have school on holidays or their birthdays. They also like to start the school year in July—it’s too hot to go outside much anyway and then they’re able to take more time off in the off-season months when their family likes to take vacations. Their school year finishes whenever they finish 180 days. It all depends on how many days off they take. Where do the Corbin kids have homeschool? They can homeschool anywhere (even in hotel rooms). However, typically, they start the day in a bedroom, the living room, or the kitchen. And they move from room to room depending on what they’re doing (painting is normally done at the kitchen table). When they need to work on something by themselves, they either go to the kitchen table or their desk. |
